8 Non-Negotiable Questions for Gold Coast Driveway Gate Buyers

Whether it’s for street appeal, better security, or keeping kids and pets safe, a good automatic gate should do more than just open and close. It should work reliably, last for years, and look great doing it.

But not all gates are built the same, and neither are the people who install them.
Choose the right one and you’ll get a gate that runs smoothly and adds value to your home. Choose the wrong one and you could end up with noisy motors, rust stains, misaligned tracks, or a gate that stops working altogether.

We’ve installed more than 1,300 custom aluminium gates across the Gold Coast, and we’ve seen what can go wrong when the right questions aren’t asked.

That’s why we created this guide. To help you make a confident, informed decision, even if you go with someone else.

 1. Do you custom-build the gate to suit my space?

Pre-made gates might “sort of” fit, but they rarely work perfectly.
Like clothes that don’t fit, close enough isn’t good enough.
A poorly fitted gate can cause long-term issues like scraping, sagging, jamming, or poor security. Regardless of your layout, driveway slope, or space constraints, precision matters.

 2. Is the gate fully welded, or just screwed together?

If the frame is screwed or riveted, expect movement and rattling over time, especially with daily use of an automatic motor. Welded frames are stronger, quieter, and far more durable.
You wouldn’t build a car with loose screws, and your gate shouldn’t be held together that way either.

 3. What materials are used, and how are they finished?

Timber can warp and fade. Steel rusts and stains surrounding concrete. Cheap coatings peel or fade quickly in our Queensland sun.
Make sure your gate is made from durable materials with a professional-grade finish that’s built to last.

 4. Is the job managed in-house, or subcontracted?

Some “gate companies” act as middlemen. They outsource the fabrication to one company, buy the hardware from another, then hand the install off to the next available subbie.
That often means poor communication, shifting timelines, and no one taking responsibility when things go wrong. Ask where the gate is actually made, and whether it’s fabricated in-house or by someone else.

 5. What warranty and aftercare do you provide?

An automatic gate should run reliably for years, but what happens if something goes wrong?
Some companies disappear after installation. Others send you in circles.
Ask what kind of support, warranty, and response time you can expect.

 6. What proof backs up your claims of quality?

Anyone can say they’re the best. Look for real evidence: awards, reviews, case studies, and repeat clients.
Recognition from industry bodies and customer feedback says a lot more than a slick sales pitch, or a nice haircut, ever could.

 7. Have you handled tricky or custom projects like mine?

Basic suburban sliders are one thing. But if you have a steep driveway, limited side clearance, a telescopic system, or a corner-turning slider, experience matters.
Make sure your installer has completed similar projects, and can show real examples.

 8. Are you properly licensed and insured?

In Queensland, any gate or structural installation work requires a valid QBCC licence.
If your installer doesn’t have one, your gate may not meet legal standards, and you may have no protection if something goes wrong.
